Telangana Assembly Witnesses Azharuddin’s Strong Stand on Minority Welfare and Governance
Hyderabad: The Telangana government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening minority welfare with a substantial budgetary allocation and a clear policy direction, as Minority Welfare and Public Enterprises Minister Mohammed Azharuddin presented the Minority Welfare Budget in the Legislative Assembly during the ongoing session.
Placing the details before the House under Demand No. 24, the Minister announced an allocation of ₹3,768.52 crore, describing it as part of a broader effort to ensure inclusive development and targeted support for minority communities across the State. The presentation comes amid continued emphasis by the Congress government on welfare-oriented governance.
Speaking during the proceedings, the Minister highlighted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the government has been prioritising minority welfare as a key component of its development agenda. He noted that allocations have been structured to not only sustain existing schemes but also to strengthen delivery mechanisms and expand outreach.
The Minister also responded in detail to issues raised by members during the discussion. Addressing queries from Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin, he said the government was actively examining concerns related to welfare implementation. On the long-pending Rubath project, he informed the House that land had already been allotted and that architectural revisions were underway to ensure better execution, after which the project would be taken up on priority. Regarding the Rajiv Yuva Vikasam Scheme, he stated that approximately 2.16 lakh applications had been received and were currently under scrutiny, with implementation to follow due verification.
Senior BRS MLA T. Harish Rao raised concerns over the pace of fund utilisation, particularly in relation to scholarship schemes, allocations to the Minority Finance Corporation, and honorarium payments for Imams and Muezzins. He pointed out that while significant allocations had been made on paper, the release of funds in some sectors appeared to be lagging.
Responding to these concerns, the Minister maintained that the government’s overall expenditure on minority welfare has been on a steady rise and assured that any delays in fund release would be addressed in coordination with the Finance Department. He emphasised that the administration remains committed to ensuring that scholarships, financial assistance schemes, and community welfare programmes are implemented effectively and without disruption.
On scholarship schemes such as MTS and Reimbursement of Tuition Fee (RTF), the Minister indicated that the process of fund release and verification was ongoing, with the objective of ensuring that eligible students do not face hardship. He also assured that matters relating to honorarium enhancements and financial support mechanisms would be taken up in line with policy priorities.
Reaffirming the government’s stance, Mr. Azharuddin said that all concerns raised by members had been duly noted and that necessary administrative steps would be taken to expedite implementation and improve outcomes. He underlined that minority welfare remains a core focus area for the State, with efforts being made to balance fiscal discipline with social responsibility.
The discussion in the Assembly reflected both the scale of the government’s allocation and the continuing debate over execution, even as the government projected confidence in its approach. With a sizeable outlay and ongoing policy interventions, the State’s minority welfare framework is expected to remain a key area of governance focus in the coming months.
