PDS Rice Scam Alert: Rs 10,000 Crore Rice Fraud Uncovered in Telangana's PDS System*

_Rs 10,000 Crore Rice Scam Uncovered in Telangana_

Hyderabad, June 8: A massive rice scam worth Rs 10,000 crore has been uncovered in Telangana, involving the diversion of paddy and rice meant for the public distribution system (PDS) to black markets and other states. The scam occurred during the tenure of the BRS government between 2019 and 2023.

According to civil supplies officials, rice millers in connivance with officials siphoned off paddy and rice worth Rs 10,000 crore. The scam was perpetuated through the custom-milled rice (CMR) scheme, where the state procured paddy from farmers and gave it to rice mills. However, millers failed to supply the corresponding quantity of boiled rice, raw rice, and other products to the state or central pools.

Raids on various mills revealed that they had no paddy stocks, contradicting their claims. In one instance, three rice mills in Nizamabad, allegedly owned by associates and family members of former BRS MLA Shakeel Aamir, were found to have missing CMR worth Rs 70 crore. The former MLA, currently in Dubai, has denied involvement in the milling business and approached the High Court to quash the FIR against him.

Officials estimate that over 35 lakh tons of paddy, equivalent to 22 lakh tons of rice, are unaccounted for. The civil supplies department has lodged an FIR against the former MLA and is investigating the scam.
